La Melbourne Mint, construite entre 1869 et 1872, a ouvert ses portes le 12 juin 1872 en tant que succursale de la Royal Mint à Londres pour fabriquer des souverains en or. Il y a des armoiries dorées proéminentes sur les portes avant et au-dessus du petit portique défini de l'entrée principale sur sa façade orientée à l'ouest. Dans l'ensemble, le complexe restant à ce jour reflète la richesse et la confiance croissantes de Melbourne à l'époque de la ruée vers l'or.
