Il y a deux ans, alors que j'allais faire remplacer la cataracte, on m'a diagnostiqué une grave dystrophie cornéenne de Fuchs aux deux yeux. Sans traitement, cela conduirait finalement à une cécité totale. Les alternatives chirurgicales typiques impliquent soit le remplacement de la cornée, soit plus récemment l'insertion d'une couche de tissu épithélial.
Heureusement, j'ai été référé à un chirurgien cornéen incroyablement talentueux, le Dr Robert Weisenthal, à Dewitt, NY. Après un examen approfondi, il m'a proposé une nouvelle procédure chirurgicale récemment disponible appelée Descemet Stripping Only (DSO pour faire court). Ce DSO serait fait juste avant de retirer la cataracte et d'insérer la nouvelle lentille. L'ensemble du processus ne prendrait que 30 minutes, mais la récupération d'une vision complète serait probablement un processus lent, prenant 2 à 3 mois.
Le Dr Weisenthal a dit que la meilleure vision que je pourrais réaliser avec DSO pourrait être seulement 20/45. Cependant, l'alternative classique me laisserait avoir besoin de gouttes stéroïdiennes pour le reste de ma vie et risquerait que la greffe soit rejetée. C'était donc une décision assez facile de choisir cette nouvelle procédure DSO.
J'ai fait faire mon œil gauche en septembre 2019, puis mon œil droit a été fait en juillet 2020. Je suis allé faire un contrôle de progression de routine le 29 septembre 2020 et j'ai été très heureux d'apprendre que mon œil gauche est maintenant 20/25 et mon l'œil droit est 20/30.
Au moment où j'écris ceci, j'ai encore besoin de lunettes pour lire pour corriger un astigmatisme léger. Sans lunettes, je peux regarder par la fenêtre et profiter d'une vision aussi bonne que je m'en souvienne. Je peux conduire sans lunettes! Dire que je suis heureux d'avoir saisi cette chance serait un euphémisme. Je me sens très chanceux et reconnaissant d'avoir été référé au Dr Weisenthal. Si quelqu'un se trouve dans cette situation, je serais heureux d'envoyer les informations que j'ai recherchées et de répondre à toutes vos questions.
