HISTOIRES DE NOM - À sa naissance en 1924, la société s'appelait la Compagnie pétrolière française. Le nom Total apparaît en 1953, mais ce n'est qu'en 1991 que le PSC disparaîtra complètement.
Un tel nom a l'avantage de la simplicité. C'est compréhensible dans le monde entier ou presque. Elle peut aussi avoir le mérite de rappeler que le groupe est présent à toutes les étapes: de la prospection pétrolière à la vente d'essence en passant par l'extraction, le raffinage et le transport. «De plus, Total est un leader», déclare Pierre-Louis Desprez, co-fondateur de Kaos Consulting, société de création de marques. Il exprime la dimension internationale de l'entreprise. "
Mais ce nom est aussi le résultat d'une longue évolution. Au fil des décennies, l'entreprise a changé cinq fois. Au départ, il y avait la Compagnie pétrolière française résumée par son acronyme, CFP. La société a été créée en 1924 à l'initiative de l'Etat et est entrée en bourse en 1929. La France avait alors besoin d'une compagnie pétrolière qui devienne actionnaire de la toute nouvelle Compagnie pétrolière irakienne et participe à l'exploitation de l'or noir irakien après la chute de la Empire ottoman.
Ce nom ne fait pas rêver? Peu importe. Jusqu'à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, son activité se limitait à l'extraction de pétrole. Changement de décor en 1947 avec le développement d'un réseau de stations-service et l'implantation à l'étranger en Europe, mais aussi en Afrique et en Australie.
L'acronyme CFP n'est pas considéré comme très approprié pour conquérir les consommateurs. En 1953, ses dirigeants décident de créer une marque plus simple, Total, apparue en 1954, accompagnée d'un logo bleu-blanc-rouge. Il supervise toutes les activités destinées au grand public (stations-service, pétrole ...). Très bientôt, le succès est au rendez-vous. La marque Total gagne en visibilité mondiale.
